Goth Music

Moody. Dark and morbid themes.

Electronic, guitar or orchestra based, at either fast or slow tempos

Gothic Rock - guitar and drums bands, with dramatic and loud (male) lead singers. Catchy. 80s. Eg, The Mission, The Cult, Bauhaus, Belisha.

Pagan Goth - sweet or heavy female vocals. Can be orchestral & choral, guitar based, or both. Eg, Ataraxia(medieval), Inkubus Sukkubus (rock), Switchblade Symphony (ethereal rock) and Die Laughing (rock)

Punk Goth - older goth such as Bauhaus, Specimen. Low-bass music, interestingly sung :P

Romantic Goth - long power cords, sweet drawn out vocals, emotive and slow. Ex., Cure, Big Electric Cat, Hungry Lucy

Power Goth - cathcy sing along tunes, exciting guitar/voice combinations. Eg., Sisters of Mercy, :Wumpscut:

Minimalist Goth - slow, broken, singing style is wide ranging, misanthropic. Ex., Kirlian Camera

Metal

Multiple guitars, drums and loud male vocalist.

Modern metal has taken to adding electronic sounds, perhaps a drum machine, and the occasional vocoder.

Heavy Metal - Primarily: Guitars -> voice -> drums. High distortion. Vocals vary from sung to shouted, chords vary from single-note repition to highly complex ballads

Black Metal - intense and fast, the chords all blur together, the singing is high pitch and faded, included are nasty samples, screaming. Ex., Emporer

Industrial

* Page on Industrial Music Categories and History *

Metal Industrial - Fast, looped guitars with drum-based rhythmns. Vocals can be anything from sweet goth-style ambience to chanting and shouting.

EBM/industrial - Electronic dance - less emphasis on guitar work and more on samples and beats.

Techno Industrial - More ambient, clean sounding industrial, no guitars (or light, faded out looped samples).

Ambient Industrial - this is a hard to classify genre, is like sweet rolling dance with eerie samples, smoothed out drum machines and non-harsh (non-metal) vocals

Power Noise - High distortion, high noise, dance orientated, no vocals, extreme. Eg Converter, Noisex, Wumpscut
