Burying

Burying procedure examples When burying a nut the Red Squirrel's movements can be broken down into a five-step sequence.
  1. Scratching a hole with the forepaws
  2. Depositiong the nut
  3. Tamping the nut down with the snout by a series of rapid blows
  4. Covering the nut with earh using 'sweeping' movements of the forepaws.
  5. Packing the earth down with alternate stamping of the front paws.

Squirrels deprived of natural food or parents will automatically know the burying procedure, it is completely inbuilt, ie, it is a fixed action pattern.

On a concrete or inpenetratable floor (if no escape is found) the squirrel will go through all the motions as if it has dug a hole... even though no hole exists. Some squirrels stop at the third stage, though.
