When burying a nut the Red Squirrel's movements can be broken down into a five-step sequence. |
Squirrels deprived of natural food or parents will automatically know the burying procedure, it is completely inbuilt, ie, it is a fixed action pattern.
On a concrete or inpenetratable floor (if no escape is found) the squirrel will go through all the motions as if it has dug a hole... even though no hole exists. Some squirrels stop at the third stage, though.
