This page is a response to Deinsen's essay.
It is true to say that the morally neutral God, having no free will and being an automation, conscious or not, is not in accordance with Christian feelings and theology on what God is or represents. Deinsens' essay is a modern attempt at giving God back his humanity.
God, as a maternal and paternal figurehead, a symbolic explanation for love and humility, is not represented by a God with no free will, who feels no surprise, shock.
Open View of God:
Platonic, Classical View:
Although a modern (and growing) belief, "open view" of God was possibly a feature of the first century or two of Christianity. Classic theology, a logical, omniscient and omnipotent God that Fundamentalist and liberal Christianity, Islam and monotheism in general believe in is most likely a result of the influence of the Greeks and philosophy on Christianity. This influence would have been strongly felt as the Christian Churches became a roman religion more than they were an offshoot of Judaism.
Nowadays, the "Open View" opinion of God is considered blasphemous and a heretical belief, that there can be things undecided by God, out of the control of God, and things that God has not predetermined, does not know in advance. The problems associated with classical theology are too great. In the modern age where computers and pure logic is no longer divine, but mechanical, classical theology has become a risk and a danger to monotheism. Open Theology, especially over the last few years, is God's last stand and a re-iteration of the Christian view of god as compassionate and personal.
As Deinsen says, the Open Theology view of God is more human; something a bit lacking from omniscience, and also something lacking from modern technology and society. Not only more Human, but also more viable. Quantum physics has served as a thorn in the side of omniscience and a god ruled universe, as the uncertainty principle looks to be a cause of the Universe itself. In Open Theology, however, quantum uncertainty is a function of god, and not a replacement theory.
Open Theology is the best defence of free will in a universe with a single god is creator, and the only way to restore God to a morally-good, humane being.
